Abstract News – “Release” Was A Success

Last Thursday, The Abstract Team got a chance to be a part of the audience to watch the showcase called ‘Release’ put on by the performing arts company, QUILT at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (UWI, Jamaica).

The aim of the show was to raise funds as they were selected to represent Jamaica in Manchester, England at “Contacting the World”, an international theatre exchange project for young people involving young companies from around the globe this summer. They were one of six fortunate companies to be invited.

The show was all about the application of SOUND. LIGHT. WORDS. PASSION. and ART. to “Release” their creative energies.

Rayon, McLean, Artistic Director of the company says

I don’t believe in thinking outside the box; I never created one in the first place, so I don’t need to find my way out

and this was very distinct in the entire show.

The group raised the bar for performing companies around the world as they entertained a small audience on the university campus.. The show featured 7 pieces, ranging from singing to dancing to acting; some even incorporating all three.

We speak for all in attendance when we say that the show was well put together and they deserve all the success that comes their way. Immaculate production and many talented people!

Sponsorship was provided by local Production Company, Factory75

You Better ‘WATCH’ Out – Our faves from the 2014 Watch Collections

They say time is of the essence and what better way to keep up than with a snazzy dazzle timepiece on your wrists! A great number of men and women everywhere (including us here at Abstract Square) will always consider the watch an IMPORTANT aspect in one’s wardrobe. Not only does it show off your unique style but it shows that you have respect for your time and the time of others.

In this post we will feature 6 watches, from the many collections released this year, that have caught our attention!*

W7100052_0_cartier_watches_01. Calibre De Cartier Diver Watch

The Calibre de Cartier Diver watch is an authentic diving instrument. A powerful accurate watch with water-resistance to 300 meters, rubber strap, maximum-precision unidirectional turning bezel coated with ADLC and time-control displays in Super-LumiNova®. Powered by a 1904 MC movement, it combines the strict technical requirements of ISO 6425 and the striking design of the Calibre de Cartier watch.

2.  MountBlanc Timewalker Extreme Chronograph DLC

According  to the  Watch Insider, Montblanc kicked off the second decade of this iconographic watch line with the presentation of the new TimeWalker Extreme Chronograph DLC. The colour of the diamond-like carbon coating is described as “Black 4”, which stands for “very black”.

The acronym DLC (= diamond-like carbon) means that the toughness of the stainless steel case’s surface has been increased to the utmost. Minuscule glass spherules are blasted under high pressure to give the steel a microscopic texture to which the DLC-coating can almost inseparably adhere, thus producing a fine matte finish on the surface. The same process is used on the other stainless steel components: i.e. the readily grasped crown, the chronograph’s buttons, the midnight-black pronged buckle, and the screwed back with its pane of sapphire crystal.

3. Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Unique Travel Time

This is the first watch to combine user-friendly access to the world’s time zones with flexible setting of the time in the destination zone to the nearest minute. This timepiece capitalises on the “Dual Wing” concept, thus avoiding any loss of precision. It displays the reference time together with the time in a second time zone, indicated digitally thanks to a jumping hour disc with the minutes indicated by a hand.

Duometre-jlc-606352JA globe at 6 o’clock shows the time zones of the planet with a subtle day/night indicator. Its sapphire crystal case-back reveals the exceptional decoration on the movement. Unique Qualities include the back of the Duomètre Unique Travel Time watch features engraved names of cities corresponding to 24 time zones and there’s a map of the world on a delicately grained dial.

#PinTuesdays – DIY Furniture Makeover – Awesome Paint Job

It isn’t a secret that many of us look around our home on a daily basis and sigh at the disaster that has become our furniture! We long for more vibrant colours in our homes and just a little more creative to keep us going.

Have no fear! This week’s pin looks at DIY Furniture Makeovers and they’re quite simple (although you just may need a helping hand or two)

Shout-out to Kathy for this awesome link to the Babble page where the article originated from. There were actually 10 paint makeovers mentioned but we chose our FAVE! And you will see why it’s a fave!

A beauty, right? This particular paint job was done by Destiny from A Place Like Us and she has blessed us with a step-by-step guide on how she got it done with her guest post on Infarrantly Creative. We have quoted below!

Various grits of sandpaper

Extra Rags

Beautiful Paint Color (Coral Gables by Benjamin Moore)

Polyurethane (Optional)

Paint Sprayer or Rollers

First take your dresser and give it a light sanding with a fine-medium grit sandpaper. You want to take any shine off or any imperfections you might see. After that wipe it down with a dry cloth or tack cloth to remove any sand.

Next, use a really good primer. This is important because you want your paint to stay put and not smear or chip away. I always use KILZ oil-based primer in a can for furniture redos. Just make sure you give it a real good shake before you spray it on, other wise when you spray you are going to get a rough texture.

Give it one good coat, two if you want to be an over achiever Smile.

After it has dried overnight or a few hours sand it again, very lightly with a fine grit sandpaper. Take your towel and give it a good wipe down to remove any debris.

For the next step I suggest you use a sprayer, because it will give you a pretty finish! But you can definitely use a sponge rollers to paint it by hand. I don’t like using brushes because of the marks. I found that sponge rollers are the next best thing if you haven’t gotten yourself a fancy sprayer.

TIP:For a pretty finish move your gun back and fourth, and follow through from edge to edge. Never stop in the middle of a piece because it might give you some drips!

At this point you can spray it with a clear coat of polyurethane for extra protection. Let it dry for a couple of day before you attach any hardware.

Thanks Destiny for this tutorial!

You can check out the rest of this article to see other cool and yummy (yes we said yummy) furniture paint jobs! Maybe you feel inspired and start your very own makeover! Please to send us pics when you do!!

P.S Be sure to go check out Destiny’s blog! She really has some good posts! Show her some love!

5 Music Albums We’re Pumped For This Year

Abstract LookOut

Music is very dear to us and we are in no way genre prejudice, although pop and hip hop are ultimate faves! So we decided to come up with a list for everyone for Abstract Lookout!

Here are 5 albums that we personally are looking forward to hearing this year!

1. Full Frequency by Sean Paul (February 18)

This is is sixth-studio album from Sean Paul and although he is Jamaican, he has managed to add a few top contenders in the hip-hop world (namely Juicy J, 2Chainz & Nicki Minaj) but has still managed to keep his the dancehall in the mix. Previously scheduled to be released in Novemeber of 2013, Sean Paul has released a few singles – Other Side of Love, Entertainment” which features 2Chainz & Juicy J as well as the remix featuring Nicki Minaj, Turn It Up & Want Dem All !

Oh, What A Life

Oh, What A Life

2. Oh, What A Life by American Authors (March 4)

This will be American Author’s debut album, having already released their singles Believer Best Day Of My Life (a favourite of ours)! We have a feeling this will be a good one.

3. Cheek to Cheek by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga (March 18)

You might have remembered the two doing a collaboration for The Lady Is a Tramp! This time, they will be doing an entire album together; one that will sure be a hair-raiser.

4. Head or Heart by Christina Perri (April 1)

One may not consider her mainstream, at least not at the calibre of  the Beyonces and Rihannas but once we heard Jar of Hearts, she had us sold! She has a great voice and her music just soothes the soul. She has already released her first single from the album, titled Human! Go have a listen! And she even has Ed Sheeran featured!!!

5. Last but not least – Adele

Now a date nor a name hasnot been confirmed but Ms. Adele did say she was working on her third studio album. According to MTV UK, Adele is currently in London working on the tracks. An inside source stated,

Adele is currently in a recording studio in London and it’s in lock-down mode for the next few weeks. Four tracks are finished in terms of writing and she’s now laying down preliminary vocals with backing music and singers. The rest of the record will be done in LA. The feel is very much Adele going back to her roots, with some modern jazz and a couple of classic old songs.

We are already excited for this!

Now, you may not be a fan of these artistes and that’s completely OK! On the other hand, you could be the President of their fan clubs and that works too! Let us know which ones you can’t wait to hear or maybe you have a few to share that would have been on your list! What are you on the LOOKOUT for?

P.S. There might just be a Part II as more announcements are made from other artistes on their upcoming projects.

#AbstractNews – 3 Interior Design Trends to look out for this year! (As told by Yanic Simard)

As promised we are giving you two posts today! This one, however, is somewhat of a reblog that we had to share!

Yanic Simard – Principal Designer at Toronto Interior Design Group, who also bogs with the Huffington Post, yesterday posted about trends to look out for this year in the Interior Design world, after being given the privilege of attending the annual Interior Design Show!

We’ve chosen our favourite 3 from his list! And we’ve added some quotes from his article!

1. Gold & Green Combos

One of the strongest trends I noticed throughout the show was a combination of gold with green. Warm metals have returned after years of chrome and silver, and cool greens are a classic counterpoint to this regal finish. This was especially well captured in the Cocoon scheme — the boutique is one of my favourite hidden gems.

We absolutely love love love this combination! Makes the room so much brighter without being too much!

2. Elegant Bathroom Fixtures & Appliances

You know my love of kitchen and bath design, and I found two spectacular new faucets: Axor Starck Organic by Hansgrohe has the appearance of an organic branch or growing plant, while the Luna faucet by Graff (as seen above) uses a very long, elegant form hung from the wall to bring water down to the sink below while creating a statement wall feature.

The creativity is another level when it comes to bathroom fixtures and decor these days. Washing hands just became fun!

3. Antique Meets Modern

Their (IKEA) logo was rendered in beautiful gold foil on a soft grey — another key trend colour — and this sense of mixing regal glam with modern sleekness was present throughout. Embracing a love of excess, their kitchen included four dramatic crystal chandeliers (not part of their own collection), while in the living area an antique daybed contrasted with their iconic Swedish styles. Mixing their affordable pieces with your existing treasures is really the key to creating a complete look. Am I discerning a newly emerging trend here of antique meeting Swedish modern design?

We are READY to move into this space!!

It is refreshing to see people getting more and more creative with the design trends these days and we are definitely looking forward to even more great ideas! How nice it would have been to be at that show to see all those amazing designs.

You can check out the full article here! And don’t be afraid to stop by and tell us what you think! Who knows? Maybe you had 3 different faves from the show!
