Abstract News – “Release” Was A Success

Last Thursday, The Abstract Team got a chance to be a part of the audience to watch the showcase called ‘Release’ put on by the performing arts company, QUILT at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (UWI, Jamaica).

The aim of the show was to raise funds as they were selected to represent Jamaica in Manchester, England at “Contacting the World”, an international theatre exchange project for young people involving young companies from around the globe this summer. They were one of six fortunate companies to be invited.

The show was all about the application of SOUND. LIGHT. WORDS. PASSION. and ART. to “Release” their creative energies.

Rayon, McLean, Artistic Director of the company says

I don’t believe in thinking outside the box; I never created one in the first place, so I don’t need to find my way out

and this was very distinct in the entire show.

The group raised the bar for performing companies around the world as they entertained a small audience on the university campus.. The show featured 7 pieces, ranging from singing to dancing to acting; some even incorporating all three.

We speak for all in attendance when we say that the show was well put together and they deserve all the success that comes their way. Immaculate production and many talented people!

Sponsorship was provided by local Production Company, Factory75

#AbstractNews – 3 Interior Design Trends to look out for this year! (As told by Yanic Simard)

As promised we are giving you two posts today! This one, however, is somewhat of a reblog that we had to share!

Yanic Simard – Principal Designer at Toronto Interior Design Group, who also bogs with the Huffington Post, yesterday posted about trends to look out for this year in the Interior Design world, after being given the privilege of attending the annual Interior Design Show!

We’ve chosen our favourite 3 from his list! And we’ve added some quotes from his article!

1. Gold & Green Combos

One of the strongest trends I noticed throughout the show was a combination of gold with green. Warm metals have returned after years of chrome and silver, and cool greens are a classic counterpoint to this regal finish. This was especially well captured in the Cocoon scheme — the boutique is one of my favourite hidden gems.

We absolutely love love love this combination! Makes the room so much brighter without being too much!

2. Elegant Bathroom Fixtures & Appliances

You know my love of kitchen and bath design, and I found two spectacular new faucets: Axor Starck Organic by Hansgrohe has the appearance of an organic branch or growing plant, while the Luna faucet by Graff (as seen above) uses a very long, elegant form hung from the wall to bring water down to the sink below while creating a statement wall feature.

The creativity is another level when it comes to bathroom fixtures and decor these days. Washing hands just became fun!

3. Antique Meets Modern

Their (IKEA) logo was rendered in beautiful gold foil on a soft grey — another key trend colour — and this sense of mixing regal glam with modern sleekness was present throughout. Embracing a love of excess, their kitchen included four dramatic crystal chandeliers (not part of their own collection), while in the living area an antique daybed contrasted with their iconic Swedish styles. Mixing their affordable pieces with your existing treasures is really the key to creating a complete look. Am I discerning a newly emerging trend here of antique meeting Swedish modern design?

We are READY to move into this space!!

It is refreshing to see people getting more and more creative with the design trends these days and we are definitely looking forward to even more great ideas! How nice it would have been to be at that show to see all those amazing designs.

You can check out the full article here! And don’t be afraid to stop by and tell us what you think! Who knows? Maybe you had 3 different faves from the show!

Abstract Review – The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Reading is  huge part of what we enjoy here at Abstract Square and recently we got our hands on John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars.

Before we get into the review, here’s some facts on the novel. Published in 2012 by Dutton Books, The Fault In Our Star has been named the #1 New York Times bestseller, the #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller, the #9 The Bookseller (UK) bestseller, #1 Indiebound bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice.

Some Reviews

A blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical, and funny. Green shows us true love…and it is far more romantic than any sunset on the beach.” –New York Times Book Review

“A pitch-perfect, elegiac comedy…it will linger long and hard in the minds of teens and former teens.” –USA Today

“John Green deftly mixes the profound and the quotidian in this tough, touching valentine to the human spirit.” –Washington Post

GoodReads’ summary on the book found on their website states:

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

We came upon this book from a BuzzFeed list of books that turned that will hit theatres this year (yes, there will be a movie for this in June 2014). We were a little hesitant at first because of 1) the genre (teenage contemporary) and 2) the subject matter – cancer and the inevitable death which most times follow a cancer diagnosis … BUT THEN … there was that curiosity about wanting to find out what happens and so we decided to give it a try!

The story is centred around the live of a 16-year-old Hazel and her journey battling the C-monster. We are transported through her frustrations and disappointments, her happy moments, her sad days and the ones filled with romance (with Augustus Waters) that we all long for (sometimes you even forget that you are reading about teenagers and not adults).

The book is filled with so much humour and at the same time there are moments when you can’t help but shed a few tears. Mind you, this book is not one that constantly keeps you on the edge of your chair – there were more mellow moments. What might have kept us reading was the goal to find out how it would end (which most people had probably figured out/guessed). One particular part of the book that we enjoyed was the Amsterdam journey where Hazel and Augustus travelled to the Netherlands to meet the author of their favourite book, An Imperial Affliction, to find out how it ended (sounds very familiar if we might add). In this particular section, Hazel’s life takes a turn for the worst and yet it was probably the most memorable experience  (in a good way) in her entire life.

We must say we were a bit disappointed with the abrupt ending, which we assume John Green did to get a reaction out of us, but then we can’t say too much for the sake of those who haven’t read it as yet. We must agree with USA Today, even after reading, it still lingers in your mind and not many authors are capable of doing that. Maybe it’s the subject matter or maybe it’s the way it was written but he (Green)  has managed to use this book to give us all a new perspective on what many cancer patients (especially younger ones) have to go through.

All in all, this was a good read and we highly recommend it! Be sure to stop by and tell us what you think of the book!

Abstract Rating – 4.25/5 stars

Shaggy & Friends A Success

A few posts ago, we made mention of a charity event that was to take place in Jamaica to raise funds for the Bustamante Children’s Hospital in Kingston.

Rumor has it that the event was ASTOUNDING and turns out those rumors were true. Abstract Square had a chance to be in attendance and let us tell you, it was indeed a well put together event … THE BEST PART WAS – It was all done for the kids.

Great energy … Great food …. Great performances … all towards ONE goal!

The show started promptly at 10: 00 pm on January 4th and the musical line-up had the crowd raving until 3 in the morning. As previously announced many top Jamaican performers were booked including event host Shaggy, Tessanne Chin (The Voice Season 5 winner), NeYo, Matthew Schuler (Top 6 Finalist from The Voice Season 5), Tarrus Riley, Konshens, Wayne Marshall,  Assassin, Chronixx, Sean Paul and there were even surprise performances. Mr Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley stopped by as well as Jah Cure.

It really was a night to remember and even as the show lights went off, the event coordinators found ways that everyone could still donate to the cause (See image below)

I dare you to care and give back to the children; even the smallest amount will help. I implore you – this is a worthy cause and one that needs everyone’s full support.

For highlights from the show and more, be sure to check out the Shaggy and Friends Facebook page.

Dare To Care – Shaggy & Friends Benefit Concert

Abstract Square would like to take a moment to acknowledge a special event that is to take place in Jamaica. A benefit concert titled Shaggy & Friends,  is spear-headed by Grammy-winning artiste, Shaggy and his team from the Shaggy Foundation to raise funds for the Bustamante Children’s Hospital in Jamaica. This concert has been happening for a few years but each year it gets better and better and this year is even better than before.

The concert this year is slated for the 4th of January 2014 on the Lawns of the Jamaican House (Office of the Prime Minster) and will feature a slew of artistes who are all on #TeamShaggy4Kids! Head-liners are none other than host Shaggy, Season 5’s The Voice winner, Tessanne Chin and R&B star NeYo. Other artistes on the line-up include Matthew Schuler, Tarrus Riley, Konshens, Wayne Marshall,  Assassin, Chronixx, Sean Paul and so much more.

What makes this event so special is that all the money raised will go towards the hospital -specifically to renovate the cardiac wing of the hospital – and it is such a GREAT act of kindness. It’ll sure to be a good time but the best part is that the children will benefit the most because it always is about giving back to the kids. As they say One Ticket = One Life!!

Stay tuned for more updates on this wonderful venture!
